No Ice On The Seventh of January

Tutty has been around for a long long time and does not believe there has ever been a January, 7th when Tutty's beloved Pecatonica River was completely ice free.

The Pecatonica River at Freeport, Illinois on January 7, 2012

Can anyone else remember a January when the river and ground actually unthawed?  Tutty knows we've had warm days in January but usually things to not completely thaw.

What are your thoughts?

  1. I'm in Northern Michigan. We usually start having snow mid-November. We got our first snow January 1st......a whopping 4 inches. We are down over four feet of snow so far this season. The businesses up here that depend on the snow are suffering. It's the very last thing our Michigan economy needs right now..........

  2. Also unusual, usually when the river thaws it rises because of everything else thawing. During this thaw the river dropped. Tutty's afraid we may be starting the year in a drought.
